Do you ever find yourself standing in front of your closet, struggling to put something together to wear for the day? You have a closet full of clothes, but nothing really appeals to you so you end up reaching in the clean laundry basket for the same top you wore two days ago. It’s frustrating, isn’t it?
Story of my life.
At least it was until I purged a boatload of clothing and started creating a Capsule Wardrobe, which is just a fancy term for a collection of cohesive basics that allow you to create many looks from classic staples.
The more I delve into creating a capsule wardrobe for myself, the more I’m convinced every mama needs one in her life.
We will get into the step by step process of creating your own capsule wardrobe, but first, you gotta know all about the awesome benefits!
Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe
1) Everything goes with everything
Capsule wardrobes are thoughtfully built so that each item in your closet is mix and matchable. What’s really great about this is you can evenly rotate through your closet without prematurely wearing through an item since it’s not being washed a gazillion times a month. (Remember that go-to tee?)
2) Endless Style Possibilities
This is an extension of my first point but I wanted to emphasize this one. Capsule wardrobes allow you to get creative with your style by easily coming up with new outfit combos which helps your clothing to feel ‘fresh’.
3) Less Clothing
Because capsule wardrobes contain pieces that complement each other and are classic in style, you won’t find yourself having to shop as often like you would with trendy items.
4) Save Money
Although there is an upfront cost when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe, especially if you buy higher quality items that will last, you’ll find yourself spending less in the long run. Next winter, you’ll already have your essentials on hand so you’ll either spend next to no money or just purchase a couple of low-cost trendy pieces to add interest.
5) No More Decision Fatigue
As a mom, one of the last things I want to do is spend energy deciding what to wear each day. Having a capsule wardrobe makes it incredibly easy to find something to wear that helps you feel you best. You’ll literally be able to grab a top, bottom, and pair of shoes with your eyes closed and be confident it’s going to work well together.
But isn’t a capsule wardrobe too basic, boring, and “neutral-intense”?
Not at all!
Yes, you’ll want to build your capsule wardrobe on a neutral palette to keep it classic, but it won’t go out of style and you’ll always look put together.
Besides, you can jazz it up to suit your personality by adding fun texture pieces and accessories. I personally go for neutrals so a capsule wardrobe is naturally my jam, but don’t forget that you can add extra interest and color with your shoes and accessories!
Convinced you need a capsule wardrobe in your life?
Here’s a step by step guide to building your first capsule wardrobe! To make it as easy as possible I created a simple checklist for you to audit your closet and determine what you need to add to it to complete your wardrobe! You can grab it here! Just click the link or photo below:)
How To Build A Mom Friendly Capsule Wardrobe
1) Sort Your Closet
I know, not fun. But you need to go through your clothes to decide what you love and want to keep and get rid of what’s worn out and donate the pieces that aren’t “you” or don’t fit you. So do this step first. If you’re only wearing a select few things from your closet, take that as an indicator that most of your clothes are just taking up space in your home. Get rid of or donate anything that doesn’t help you to feel your best.
2) Take Note
Look at the checklist and check off any items that you already have and won’t need to purchase. No need to spend money on items you already have on hand!
3) Grab The Basics
Okay, so now we are going to get into the nitty-gritty of what makes up a capsule wardrobe. This is going to be a pretty inclusive list, but remember, you can take your time to establish your wardrobe.
Like I said before, building a capsule wardrobe can be expensive if you are in need of a lot of items so you can choose to get them all now or slowly add them to your closet (which is what I’m doing).
If you plan on doing the same, my advice would be to add the items that you feel will give the most versatility first.
Sidenote: I’ll be sharing ways to save money later on in this post!
This is a must category for mamas. It’s a fun way to look stylish without sacrificing comfort and functionality for those busy days!
Sweatshirt With Dropped Shoulder Seam in Grey
Moto Leggings in Black
Nursing Hoodie (I couldn’t resist adding this to the list because of the ingenious idea of a hidden zipper for easy nursing access!)
Steve Madden Lancer Sneakers in Blush or Grey (Super chic, yet sporty) or Vans Old Skool Canvas Sneakers
I’m including this category because let’s be real, the right undergarments not only help our clothes to lay nicely but help us to feel our best as well!
These are gorgeous and would look so cute peeking out the neckline of an oversized sweater. Also, being smaller chested I know the question of support isn’t really an issue for me.
However, some reviewers claim that they provide nice support for larger breast sizes. If you’re curious if they would work for you, I would either read the reviews or maybe contact support to ask!
Tip: Be sure to check the sale section for off-season colors! When I was shopping online there the other day they had a gorgeous light aqua color for less than $10!
Because most nursing bras are just so darn ugly and this one is super pretty. Who knew that pretty nursing bras are out there? #shocker
Ways To Save Additional Money
Aside from shopping normal sales, there are a few tricks up my sleeve for how you can save even more as you’re building your capsule wardrobe.
1) Start shopping through Ebates
All you have to do is start your shopping trip through Ebates and you’ll earn automatic rebates on your purchases. Each quarter, you’ll get a check with the amount you saved through them whenever you shop online. Plus, if you aren’t already a member, you can sign up for free and get $10 instantly. As of writing this post, you can get up to 6% back on Amazon, 6% back at Old Navy, and 1% back from Soma. So it’s definitely worth checking out!
2) Purchase a discounted gift card from Raise.com
Raise offers gift cards you can purchase for a percentage off. Just search the retailer you are planning on purchasing from and check to see if there are any discounted gift cards available. An important thing to note about this is that they offer both Vouchers (redeemable only instore) and Egift (Redeemable online), so make sure you are purchasing the right type!
3) Check coupon sites
I like to check at retailmenot.com to see if there are any coupon codes I can use. While most of the time valid coupon codes are announced on the retailer’s website, there has been a time or two where I’ve uncovered a hidden gem from checking this site! It’s worth taking 2 seconds to look!
4) Shop End Of Season Sales
This is probably the least fun way to save money because you’ll essentially be purchasing items to wear for the next season. However, because you’ll be buying classic staples you can be confident that the items you purchase won’t be out-of-style when the weather gets cold again.
Besides, depending on where you live, you might still get some good use out of your capsule wardrobe before the weather really starts to warm up!
5) Wait for an item to go on sale
I NEVER pay full price and I don’t want you to either! Things will go on sale, trust me. Prime example: I love the brand, Beyond Yoga. Their tops are ultra soft, comfortable, and flattering. I recently purchased one that was originally $88.
Yeah, I was never going to pay that much.
So I waited until it reached final markdown at $17.89 and was that worth it?
So much yes.
Now I can wear it AND be around my babies at the same time without freaking out.
Just remember, in the case of clothing, it pays to wait. And if that grey sweater you’re waiting for goes out of stock in the meantime, it’s okay. There are other grey sweaters!
Alright, so that’s it for today. In cased you missed the link for your free checklist you can grab it here!
Til next time!
