Today I am so, so excited to share the first installment in my new series, Women Who Inspire. We all know the journey of pursuing your goals can sometimes be a lonely one and when the going gets tough the temptation to give up is ready and waiting for you. When it comes to achieving our goals, it’s not a matter of if we will feel discouraged at times, but when.
And because the when will inevitably happen, it’s super important to seek out those that are crushing their goals to learn their stories and gain inspiration from them!
That’s why I created this series. My hope is that the stories of those featured will inspire to keep going when you face the times you’d rather sleep in than get up an hour earlier to work on your goals or stay in your comfort zone instead of pushing through the fear that always accompanies growth.

Today’s interview is with the lovely Kim Anderson and she is absolutely rocking her goals! A little over four years ago, she decided to start a thrifty lifestyle blog as a way to use her creative talents. Over time she has not only grown her blog but is now a published author. (She hasn’t stopped there as you’ll see in just a bit!)
I *think* it’s safe to say she is kicking ass and taking names.
Let’s get into it!
Hey Kim! TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BUSINESS, WHERE IT STARTED AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TODAY.
I’m Kim Anderson. I’m a blogger, author, podcaster and speaker- which is pretty much my dream job mashup! When I started I was a stay at home mom writing children’s ministry curriculum on the side desperately trying to find something to use my creativity and talents in a way that made good money. Today my husband has quit his full-time engineering job and is a stay at home dad/entrepreneur too because my online business supports our family, I spend my days blogging, writing and podcasting and have found my purpose!
1) WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START YOUR JOURNEY? WHAT MADE YOU FINALLY SAY YES TO PURSUING YOUR GOALS?
I was tired of feeling lost. Tired of worrying about who I was going to be when my kids grew up. Honestly, it started with a little desperate prayer in the shower one night while I was crying my eyes out. When I went to bed that night a thought crossed my mind- “start a blog.” The next day I read everything I could get my hands on. One blogger inspired me because her husband was an aerospace engineer and she wrote about how her blog had afforded them life flexibility because her husband was able to quit his corporate job! That connected with me on a deep level and I decided to make that my goal too! I thought, if she can do it, I can do it too!!!
2) DID YOU HAVE A CLEAR VISION OF WHERE YOU WANTED TO GO OR WAS IT A CONSTANTLY EVOLVING PROCESS?
I had a clear vision. I wanted to make enough that my husband could quit his job and pursue his own passions. And I wanted to wake up every day and do what I really enjoyed. Something that fulfilled me. I feel like I have arrived there and now I just enjoy the process of building my own business my way and seeing what works and what doesn’t work! I’m always learning, growing and pushing myself to try new things.
3) DID YOU EVER FEEL LIKE GIVING UP? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THOSE MOMENTS?
Every time a troll leaves an ugly comment. Every time someone corrects my grammar or spelling in a mean kind of way. Anytime I can’t figure out how to do something on the technical side myself!
4) WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST STRUGGLE ON THE PATH OF PURSUING YOUR GOALS?
Usually, it involved a lack of knowledge or understanding. If I didn’t understand how to do something I had to find a way to either learn it myself or hire someone who knew more than me!
5) IF YOU COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY? IF SO, WHAT?
I have been pretty darn happy with my path thus far.
6) HOW DO YOU DEFINE “SUCCESS”?
Success happens when you create a goal and then achieve it. I know that many women are in a constant comparison trap where they feel like they need X amount of web traffic or X amount of money to say they are successful. I say you are successful when you achieve the goal you set out to conquer. In my case, I wanted my husband to quit his job and when he did that, I felt success in my journey.
7) HOW HAS THIS JOURNEY CHANGED YOU AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE?
I now see life as a wide open journey. I chose what I do, how I do it, where I go and what days I get to take off. The only person I have to answer to is me- and I like it that way!
8) WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS A GOAL OR DREAM THEY WANT TO PURSUE, BUT IS AFRAID TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP?
Decide. Make a plan. And do it. You WILL have regrets if you don’t.
9) WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Any woman who fights for the life she wants.
10) WHAT ARE YOU LOVING LATELY AND WHY?
I actually love the books Essentialism and The 12 Week Year.
